What Steps to Take for Making a Fly Screen

Protect your home with a Flexiscreen Fly screen door to prevent a fly and any other insect from entering your house through an opening. It is actually easy to make one. All you have to do is prepare the necessary materials and tools and follow the correct set of instructions. Here are the steps that you should take when you make this project.

First of all, you have to prepare the materials that you will need for this project. These materials include a fly screen mesh which is made from aluminum or fiberglass, framing and corner stakes, swivel clips, PVC spline, and safety glasses. You will also need tools such as a measuring tape, hacksaw, hammer, screwdriver, spline wheel, mitre box, hot water, sharp knife, and square and pencil. All of them should be ready before you start your project so that you can save time.

After you prepare the materials and tools, you need to secure your safety next. Since you will cut, plane, and saw timber, you must wear an approved dust mask. You must wear ear protection and safety glasses within the duration of your project, too. You also need to make sure that there will be no children nearby when you do the project.

You are now ready to make the fly screen. To start, you must measure the dimensions of the opening where you will put the screen. You might want to allow a tolerance of 3mm to make sure that the screen will fit perfectly. With the use of a handsaw and mitre box, you should make 45 degree corner cuts to cut the frame. You might need to reduce the dimensions of the frame as needed by corner stakes in some situations.

In order to make the frame, you will need to join the frames together after you insert the corner stakes. In order to prevent damages in case where you need to apply force to get these frames together, you should put a block of wood between the hammer and the frame. You should then test the frame to see if it fits. If not, you should apply a little amount of force in order to adjust it.

You must make sure that you will lay the frame flatly on the surface and drape the mesh over it. You should cut the mesh on the three sides. On the fourth side, you must give an allowance of around 80mm so that you can stretch the mesh. You must then soak the PVC spline into hot water so that you can easily manipulate it with your own hands. With the use of a spline roller, you should press the PVC spline into place. You have to make sure that you will stretch the mesh out while you press the spline. You should trim the excess mesh with the sharp knife and attach the swivel clips afterwards. You will then be able fit the finished screen into the opening, like a window or a door. If you plan to paint the area, you must do the painting first before you attach the screen.
